Head Coach – Cody Crawford

This is a bit of me and my journey, its raw and real, and what you’ll get on a day to day basis.

“CrossFit for me started in BC at CrossFit Vernon in 2010 ago as a stepping stone to get into better shape for fire department fitness tests as they are structured similarly. I went to college to be a professional firefighter and CrossFit was a good comparison and excellent preparation for these tests. I was hooked on it immediately so when I got 100% on my next fitness test just a few months in, I knew it was going to be a huge part of my life. I have been to several competitions ranging from gym local “Paleo Challenges” to self tiered internet signup competitions around BC including team entries. Three years later I did my Level 1 certification and started coaching at CrossFit Vernon where it all started. I am proud to be a part of CFV and feel honored that I am looked to for coaching tips, technique, advice, support and ideas. I used to be an unhealthy, overweight person, and am now in the best shape of my life. A person who’s goal is to make Canada West Regionals and compete.

The highlight of my day is when I’m headed to the gym, walk in the door with all my friends and (not blood) family there. I moved to Vernon from Alberta and didn’t know a soul, so my CrossFit and fire department friends are quite literally my best friends, and family here. I love walking in and feeling the positive atmosphere! Everyone is stoked to be there, support each other and help each other to be the best they can be. It has honestly brought tears to my eyes, seeing the most unorthodox group of friends pulling together to get the one last person through the hell they are experiencing. Then sharing in celebration and being stoked about doing it again the next day. It has created an amazing bond amongst members in the community of all ages and been an amazing support system for people when they’ve needed it, in several cases I know about. Myself included.

This is what CrossFit is to me, it’s a standard of fitness that’s recognized by people who have never even tried it. A safe and effective way of pushing personal boundaries of fitness. I think it comes with a certain level of expectation, that anyone at any fitness level can participate in these functional movements, improve, feel better, be healthier and see results! As well as an expectation to maintain the CrossFit movement and technique standards. I also think that as a coach it comes with a huge responsibility to be able to recognize peoples limits, strengths, and weaknesses and be able to create a safe and effective workout regime based on these observations. Beyond all that it’s a place where when you’re there you’re family, it’s a team, you’re not in it alone, you’re not better than anyone and no one is there to judge you.

I am a very competitive person and I love how much further I’ve realized I can push myself through my training and lifestyle. It has helped me to be constantly driven to be the best I can be, in the gym, community, and life in general. I love the responsibilities that come with a leadership role. Having people look to you with questions, needing help, support, instruction, or a friend. I enjoy the challenges and possibilities that come with something you build and that is your own. I love working with people, helping people, being a positive role model and an involved member of my community.

This is what I want! Opening and running a CrossFit gym has become a dream I fully plan on filling and succeeding at. My goal is to recreate for other people the success and enjoyment I have experienced along the way.”
